ERNEST PENNYWORTH WAS placing new books into a shelf when Flick walked in the door with a worried look on his face.

“Come in Flick and pour yourself some coffee. The crackers are...”

“I need to speak with you right now Ernest!” Flick interrupted. “It can’t wait and it’s a matter of life and death.”

Ernest put the books down and stepped down from the ladder.

“Come lad,” Ernest said in a gentle tone. “Tell me all about it.”

Sitting down by the workbench, Flick started to explain.

“I had a late night visitor again and this is really bad. The burning man who came to me years ago is back and he wants a favor.”

“He’s still hanging around after all these years?” Ernest asked. “I had hoped that he would just fade away in time.”

“No, it’s him and he’s more than just that.” Flick said. “He took on the image of the snake in the great hall and the woman I’d met back in Des Moines. He claims to be the snake as well as our benefactor.”

“You’re sure about this?” Ernest asked in disbelief. “Could this really be possible?”

“Not only that, he wants me to offer up the professor and said I could leave.”

Ernest poured each of them a cup of coffee and poured a little something extra in from under the counter.

“If this is all true and mind you I’m not saying it’s not, the beast is able to change shapes and is afraid of what the professor might reveal to the world. I think the beast needs us just as much as we need it.”

“I think that we need a bait and switch to get you both out of here. As a matter of fact, I might just come along myself. Perhaps we can get some help from the outside to put an end to its shenanigans. We need a plan and have little time to accomplish such things.

“We have another train coming in two weeks and it will serve as a distraction while we make a break for the entrance. We’ll meet with the mayor and a few of the bravest men to figure things out.” Ernest paused for a moment. “One thing we know is that the professor must not come down here. I have a feeling he’s to valuable and might serve us better alive.”

The two men talked through the afternoon and then closed up the shop. They went to make up the list of people needed and supplies for the great escape.
